Cold weather is the perfect excuse to cozy up next to your significant other. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking about what to do for that special person in your life. Aiming to steer clear of heart-shaped boxes of chocolate or a stuffed Valentine’s Day monkey which will wind up piled in the corner of our daughter’s room, I thought a fun weekend trip to the Smokies would be the perfect solution to my dilemma; it also might serve as a nice thought starter for you as well.
Not only is the area beautiful this time of year, the cooler temperatures and longer nights provide the ideal ambiance for a romantic couple’s getaway. In this post you’ll find accommodations and dining suggestions.
Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Cabins provide a relaxing and comfortable location for your home base. We try to make a trip to the cabins each year to enjoy time away from home. Not only do you experience awesome views of the Smokies, many of the cabins have really great sights of the Pigeon Forge cityscape. Whether you are traveling with kids or other members of your extended family, Dollywood cabins can accommodate groups of all sizes. My secret tip for those looking for a unique cabin experience; book The Grotto. It is a one-bedroom cabin which offers an in-ground, indoor swimming pool on the lower level.
I enjoy eating! Luckily for me (and my wife), a good meal is crucial to a romantic celebration. Here are a few great Smoky Mountain ideas. The Melting Pot in Gatlinburg offers a number of delectable fondue options, including great dippable main course offerings like filet mignon and succulent chicken breast. Dessert includes a number of variations of chocolate fondue with strawberries, bananas, pineapple, pound cake, brownies and more for dipping.
Other dining offerings for couples include The Peddler and Best Italian. My wife and I frequently choose The Peddler for anniversaries or other special occasions. The Peddler includes a large salad bar with more options than I can list (or remember for that matter), along with some wonderful cuts of steak.
Best Italian has two locations. Yes, Best Italian is the name and, surprise, it serves Italian food! For a more romantic atmosphere, visit the original location in the Elks Plaza Shopping Center in Gatlinburg. Both restaurants serve some of the “best Italian” food you will find in town (see what I did there). Be sure to try the garlic rolls! For main courses, I’ve never had anything I didn’t like. From pizza, veal parmigiana, spaghetti and meatballs, antipasto salad, they’ve got it all. And one slice of cake is plenty big enough to share!
