Last Weekend of Smokies Summer is Packed with Fun!

Labor Day weekend – still feels like summer with the warm sunny days, but you know by the cooler morning temperatures that fall is just around the corner.

I also love this last hurrah of summer, because it means there are so many fun activities planned to celebrate the season that just was and head into fall with a bang. My Smoky Mountain home has lots of things in the works to keep you busy all weekend long – here’s just a taste of what you might want to put on your calendar starting in September!

On Saturday, Sept. 2, Dollywood is gonna “Rock the Smokies” again with this popular music festival featuring the absolute best in contemporary Christian. One of the things I really like is that there are multiple shows throughout the day (at 1, 4, and 7 p.m.) at stages all over Dollywood so you can literally be surrounded by these high-energy melodies all day long! The headliners are Grammy and Dove Award-winning Casting Crowns and Mac Powell from Third Day (the Casting Crowns/Mac Powell concerts are separately ticketed by going to www.rockthesmokies.com). I’m also excited about hearing Jordan Feliz, Ryan Stevenson, Micah Tyler and Jimi Cravity – what an awesome day of music it’s going to be!

This summer’s end holiday also is last splash time for the season at Dollywood’s Splash Country. Can’t believe it’s my final time to be able to challenge the family on Tailspin Racer until next year, so I’m going to make the most of that awesome ride and also relax at a much slower pace on the lazy river. Dollywood’s Splash Country is open all weekend (and also the whole week before) but Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 4 is the final day for all the splashy fun. Sigh.

And here’s an idea – make the most of the last days of summer at both parks and make a weekend of it by staying at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa. You can just hop on the trolley and leave even the driving to someone else so you can just concentrate on relaxing. I’m going to top off the day with bedtime stories and s’mores by the firepit and maybe soak up (literally!) some relaxation at the Spa there. I’m more relaxed already just thinking about it.

I can’t lie – I’m going to miss you, summer. But with my Smoky Mountains promising a sendoff with lots of fun and a final splash or two, I’m okay with the calendar turning you into fall. Until next year …

If it has anything to do with East Tennessee, this Dollywood blogger loves it. Ellen Liston was born in Kingsport and grew up in a rural environment that she says has many similarities to the Sevier County area and the beautiful Smoky Mountains here. When she’s not at Dollywood or enjoying the multitude of activities and attractions in these mountains, Ellen can usually be found cheering on the Tennessee Volunteers, particularly at football and Lady Vols basketball games, or hanging out with her family – sometimes cheering on the Vols together! Some of her favorite things are reading almost any kind of book imaginable, history, crime dramas (especially Perry Mason and Forensic Files), old movies, ‘80s music, and most anything to do with her Scottish heritage, including kilts and bagpipes. She and her husband Scott live in South Knoxville on 6 acres with their yellow labs, Charlie and Rudy, and a Maine Coon cat with a major attitude, Sam.
