National Ice Cream Day at Dollywood

I can pretend to need an excuse to talk about ice cream (National Ice Cream Day is always the third Sunday in July—which means THIS weekend!), but between you, me and everyone who knows me—I don’t need an excuse. I love ice cream. And, they say you talk about what occupies your thoughts, right? I want you to be empowered with information to make a good choice this National Ice Cream Day, so I created a list of my favorite Dollywood spots to indulge in a sweet, creamy treat.

Dollywood has award-winning food. That’s no secret. Those accolades and claims to fame extend beyond the main dish. Stop at the Sweet Shoppe to check out the Candy Kitchen where master craftsmen make taffy and other melt-in-your-mouth confections—but be sure to buy some ice cream! Waffle cones and bowls are baked fresh daily (can you smell it now?), and old-fashioned milkshakes are made with whole milk. I recommend the red velvet milkshake—be sure to watch for seasonal flavors!

Did you know that Dollywood partners with Mayfield Dairy Farms? You can find Mayfield ice cream in Dollywood’s Sweet Shoppe. And, there are even a couple of ice cream flavors that feature the popular coasters FireChaser Express and Lightning Rod!

If your sweet tooth hits you when you’re not close to the Sweet Shoppe, chances are, you’re still close to some pretty good ice cream. We spend a lot of time in Country Fair when we visit Dollywood with our 2 year old. If I want [read: NEED TO HAVE] something “small” to eat, my husband knows to get me a vanilla cone from Blue Ribbon Soft Serve, or a thick milkshake from Red’s Drive-In when we’re in Jukebox Junction. It’s so simple and so perfect on a hot day—when I actually get to eat it. Sometimes I have to wrestle it away from my son! Plus, there are several Dippin’ Dots locations throughout Dollywood. Those are always crowd-pleasers.

At Dollywood’s Splash Country, a day of swimming pairs wonderfully with Berries n’ Cream—think parfait-style ice cream with fresh strawberries. And, I already mentioned Dippin’ Dots, but you should know that Dollywood’s Splash Country has Dippin’ Dots sundaes new at the water park this year! Also worth a try on a hot summer day is a frozen chocolate banana—that can count as ice cream, right? You can find these delicacies at both Dollywood and Dollywood’s Splash Country.

Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort also offers frozen treat opportunities. Visit the DM Pantry for some Mayfield hand-scooped offerings that will satiate those ice cream cravings. Remember, you don’t have to be a resort guest to stop by. Sometimes a meal and/or a treat at the resort is just what you need to polish off the perfect Dollywood day.

Be sure to add ice cream to your agenda this Sunday, July 16. Happy eating!
